he Hawaii native grew up in Kailua-Kona, home to the famed Iron Man Triathlon and what he calls “an outdoor playground”. He grew up watching the triathletes biking past his house, amazed at their physical endurance, and spent most of his time surfing, spear fishing, climbing on lava rocks and playing football. As as adult living on the mainland, Robert says that opening a gym was a natural progression of where he saw his life heading. “I knew I wanted to do something everyday that had a positive impact on people,” he says. He founded the Old Village Gym 14 years ago with the goal of creating a playground atmosphere to make working out a fun and positive experience. “I have a very Zen approach to working out,” says Robert. “Have learned over the years that the more intuitive you become at listening to your body, the better it responds. You don’t always have to kill yourself to get into great shape.” He adds, “I’m serious about getting my clients where they need to be, but I am going to make sure that they have fun along the way.”
His fitness philosophy? Modify workout plans (and change them frequently) based on the needs of individual clients. Robert explains, “there just can’t be a cookie cutter approach when you are dealign with people. I want them to leave the gym looking forward to their next workout!”
